A Spot of Window-shotting

Those who know me well know that to say I’m partial to a purchase or two down the shops is putting things mildly. Suffice to say that ‘Confessions of A Shopholic’ had me squirming with grisly self-recognition on more than just one occasion! I’m inclined to blame it all upon an adolescence spent in shoptastic Singapore (If you’ve been you’ll understand what I mean when I describe it as having serious shopping mall saturation…)

Right now, however, frivolous splurges are just not compatible with life on the road, which is maybe why I spend so much time with my nose (and camera lens) pressed up against shop windows. Pretty lucky really, because it means I have lots of entries for the shop front competition that Hitch-hikers’ Handbook is running this week :)!

Gems in a Lhasa (Tibet) shopfront. Truly bedazzling, but the real bling thing..who can say?

Sri Lanka clothing emporium. What struck me was the dedication to scale. Multi-floor coordination achieved.

Shoes in a Shanghai shop window. These vivid shoes stacked skyscraper style proved an eye-catching sight on the city streets.

Kitsch is everywhere in China, but I loved the way the traditional buildings were reflected in this Miffy-themed display in the ancient (but increasingly trendy) town of Lijiang, Yunnan, China.

A butcher’s shop display, Lhasa, Tibet. No further window-dressing required (or even a window, for that matter! and why bother with 4 walls when propping one’s merchandise up against one will do?)

Day of The Dead meets haute couture in this display in this colourful Cabo San Lucas store, Baja California, Mexico. I like the way it’s decidely undreary, much like the Mexicans’ attitude to their dearly departed.

  1. Great selection of shop window photos, Alex! They’re all very interesting, we’ll definitely include some of them in our post!
The meat is just horrible, we’ve seen similar practices in a Laotian market. Displayed for the flies to devour!
And that shopping mall in Sri Lanka! Are these human-sized dummies? When I first looked at your photo I thought they were Barbie dolls! 🙂

  2. Thank you! I think the meat is yak, which tasted okay under normal circumstances, but is not the least bit tempting here!
The mannakins are life-sized and the window covered the entirety of a department store-front!
